Southmead Athletics Football Club (AFC) Reserves

With the new set up and committee in place at Southmead Athletic, the main concern was that it did not have a second team competing any more. At the very first meeting it was a general feeling that we would need a second string team to complement and back up its first team squad.

After initially being told by the Suburban league that there was no places available for any more sides, we were later contacted and told that a side had pulled out and that there was now a space that could be filled by our reserve side. So with Ryan Sutton taking charge with a bit of assistance from Southmead Stalwart, Steve Woodlands and ex Bear and Rugged Staff Manger, Gorden Brown, it looked like being quite an eventful season.

There were one or two teething problems, the main one being that they played some two or three home games before finding out that Greenway was only booked for one team, the first team. Fortunately there was a slot for another side so it wasn't such a disaster and we were able to keep them at Greenway for the Home games.

Once they got going and had a settled side, it didn't take long for them to climb the league. With some quality players like Rob Sivers, Danny Daly, Steve Woodlands, Wong (Dwain Pope) and Liam Appleton, this would make up for the likes of Ryan Sutton and Gorden Brown (only kidding). Any way, despite the attempts by a few of the first team players to wreck the season by losing a night game to Avonmouth 4-3 after being 3-1 up, it ended on a high because the reserves ended up being promoted even though we finished third. With some young talent coming on, the likes of Josh (Leon's Brov), Ben Fry and the possibility of Tony A. helping us out, the boys can't wait for next season to start.

This little write up is dedicated to Mr. Gorden Brown, not because he's passed away or anything, but because he nagged everybody concerned to get something on this site about the reserve side. (Fair played Gord!)
